Marvin was not behaving in class. The 10 year old was constantly moving around and troubling the other children. After the lesson, he and several others responded to the invitation.
Margaret counseled the other children first, and then told him that she wanted to talk to him. While she was talking to Marvin, one of the ladies w ho invited CEF to come said, “Miss, miss, talk to him because he is telling the children in school, the teachers, and everybody that he wants to kill himself. When the coun selors talk to him, he will not tell them why he wants to kill himself.”
After the lady left, Margaret asked Marvin if that was true. He waited awhile and did not say anything. She said, “Look me straight in the eye.” Marvin looked at her. “You know what”, Margaret said, “God loves you. He tells you that in John 3:16. God loves you so much that he brought me all the way from Guyana to let you know that he loves you and that I love you too.” She could see a difference in him immediately and asked again why he wanted to kill himself. Marvin responded, “Because nobody loves me and nobody cares about me.”
Margaret discovered that his mother is a single parent, he stays with his grandmother, and it seemed to him that he was living on his own. The only way he knew how to get attention was to tell his teachers and classmates that he was going to kill himself. That day, Marvin accepted Christ. Even after Margaret was done counseling him, he would not leave her side.
Margaret still calls to find out how Marvin is doing. When she calls, she talks first to Marvin’s mother and then to Marvin. When she asks how he is doing, Marvin’s mother says that he is still misbehaving. But when she talks to Marvin she can tell there is a difference. Marvin is not the same little 10 year old boy. He now knows that somebody loves him and somebody care about him.
